Stephen was a talented painter and printmaker. He also loved cycling, visiting museums, galleries and European cities like Florence.

For inspiration I continue to look at painting, recently I saw some wonderful fresco paintings in Italy. In early Renaissance paintings the artists seems to love putting colours together in the fabrics worn by subjects of the painting. So in the painting I am thinking of , a row of figures are dressed in full length robes and the sequence of colours is great! This is taking an abstract view of a figurative painting, but the way it works has never changed. The artist may have thought 'I will amaze you painting this green robe with a blue band around the edge' and five hundred years later it still looks amazing and gets a reaction.
