A loving Husband, Dad, Grandad, brother and friend. A man who was dedicated to his family and happiest when he was with them. A true gent.
When tasked with writing a tribute to my grandad, I felt a deep responsibility to do him justice. I’m resided to the fact that I will never be able to construe what a remarkable man he was, but I will do my best. My grandad was the best man I’ve had the pleasure of knowing. He was kind, generous, and above all else, devoted to caring for his family and friends. The unwavering support and guidance he offered was unparalleled, coupled with his humour and ability to make everyone laugh.

Where did it all start? Korea. Back when Grandad was in the army, he became pen pals with my grandma, Pat. And the rest is history. The way my Grandad cherished my Grandma was something rarely seen in today’s age, and something many of us had the privilege of witnessing first hand and growing up in the company of.

Sadly, in May 2021, my Grandad was diagnosed with Pancreatic cancer. We are all aware of the travesty cancer causes to the lives of millions of families around the world. Whilst progress has been made in treating numerous cancers, pancreatic cancer still has one of the lowest survival rates at 3%. In attempt to ensure progress is made in this field, and in our pursuit to ensure other families, if just one, don’t have to endure the pain of this disease, in the name of Barry Shepherd, we would like to raise money for the Pancreatic Cancer organisation, where funds will be used to fight this disease in pursuit of one day, winning the war.

In true fashion, Barry was brave and soldiered on until the very end. Barry passed away on 10th September; his family and friends were with him throughout, as he will always be with us. May he Rest in Peace, and be reunited with his wife Pat once more.

Barry’s funeral will take place at Markeaton Crematorium on Tuesday 28th September at 1.30pm.
